Just about everyone agrees that childhood obesity is a major public health problem in the United States.

According to the CDC, the US Centers for Disease Control, about 30 percent of children in this country, between the ages of 2 and 19 are overweight or obese. And the IOM, Institute of Medicine, predicts that one in three children born in the year 2000 will develop type 2 diabetes at some point during their lifestyle.

Childhood obesity is not just a problem for the children and family’s that are directly affected. It is a problem that will impact the nation well into the future, as overweight children become overweight adults.

Already, the nation is dealing with an adult population where more than two-thirds of adults are overweight or obese, and many of these individuals have developed chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep apnea and a host of other health problems. This trend is likely to continue as more and more overweight and obese children become obese adults.

CHANA Project is committed to reducing the growing rate of childhood obesity by teaching children and families how to make healthy food and lifestyle choices.
